Milwaukie Mom,

Giving family gifts—joint gifts for multiple members of one family—is a great way to cut down on the number of gifts you have to buy. If you are like me, you know families whose children are getting older and are harder to buy for, you don’t know what toys the kids already have, and besides, they have plenty already. Yet, you still want to show you care.

By buying one family gift rather than one for each member, you will probably save a little money. Better yet, your gift may encourage family togetherness for the special people on your list. Here are some great ideas for family gifts.

Something yummy. . .
It’s hard to go wrong with an edible gift of yummy things that can be enjoyed by all members of the family. You can keep it small and affordable, assembling seasonal things like hot chocolate and cookie mixes. Oregon Companies like Made In Oregon and Harry and David offer food gifts at all price levels and will mail them directly to the recipients.

Something to experience. . .
For families who seem to have it all already, consider giving the gift of an experience, such as tickets to a game, passes to the zoo, movie theater or restaurant gift certificates.

Something for the kitchen. . .
Food preparation can lead to family bonding and everyone knows the benefits of families dining together. Fun kitchen gifts for families include things like pizza stones, ice cream makers, and panini grills.

Something entertaining. . .
Board games provide loads of family fun, and in addition to classics like Scrabble and Monopoly, some modern favorites include Apples to Apples and Cranium. DVDs are another good option. Movies combined with favorite film watching snacks (popcorn, licorice, etc.) would make a fun family gift.

Happy holidays!
