How to know you’re going to love your new paint color

Spring is finally here, and maybe you’d like to freshen up your rooms with a new paint color. So you head down to the big home improvement store and you’re confronted with a WALL of paint samples. You take home a fistful of those little cards with the miniature color chips, and with much agonizing, have narrowed down your choices to three or four. And now you’re paralyzed.

How do you decide on a color? You’re not sure how it’s going look on a huge wall, much less your entire room. How do you know if you’re going to like it? What if you paint the whole room and hate it?

There’s an easier way to pick a paint color you love, and save time, money and frustration at the same time. Here’s what I do for my clients and you can do the same thing: go back to the paint store and pick up a sample-sized jar of your favorite color (many stores have these now), one of those disposable foam brushes and a big sheet of inexpensive poster board.

Now paint the entire piece of poster board with your sample paint. A giant paint card makes it so much easier to pick a color than painting a bunch of little splotches on the wall. You can tack it up on different walls and hold it next to furniture or artwork you’ll need to match. And when you’re finally ready to paint, you won’t have to worry about covering up all those other splotches that didn’t work out.

Leave your paint card up on the wall and live with it for a few days. Look at the color throughout the day in different light. If it’s not right, you’re only out a few bucks, and you can easily try other colors. If you love it, you’re ready to spring for a few gallons!
