It became a classic in the 1960s, a classic of biblical proportions.  The lyrics are taken almost verbatim from the Book of Ecclesiastes.  “To Everything There is a Season” was composed by Pete Seeger in 1959 and recorded by him in 1962.  The phrase “Turn, Turn, Turn” subsequently became its title and, in 1965, The Byrds’ version attained the status as #1 pop song with the oldest lyrics.

The New Year is about time.  It’s about turning—turning a page on a new calendar, turning over a new leaf or towards a new idea.  Perhaps that’s where New Year’s resolutions have their beginnings, in human nature’s desire to strive, to continue and to change.

New Year’s resolutions don’t have to be “new.”  They can be renewals—“Re-New Year’s Resolutions.”   Tweak that fitness program you started last year.  Stay with it to improve and maintain your health for another year.  Make it a resolution to renew your contract with yourself.  Keep the old things that are working for you and be mindful of new ones.

Have you ever wanted to re-visit something you learned in your youth?  That’s what I plan to do this year.  A lifetime ago, I took classical guitar lessons.  This year, I plan to relearn the notes on the guitar keyboard and play again one of my favorite pieces by Bach.  That’s it, one piece.  In the process of relearning that one piece, I will be learning how to play many more.
Look at the New Year as a time to re-learn, to re-do, to re-think and to re-new.  That’s a resolution in itself!  At the risk of ending this sentence with a preposition, take time to, take time for, and take time from.  Take time to notice, to smile, to listen.  Take time for you, for reading, for silence.  Take time from television, the computer, from texting or the radio.

The New Year is a time to look back and a time to look ahead.  “To everything there is a season.”  There may not be time for everything but there is time for every thing that matters to you, one thing at a time.  That one thing may take you a year.  Find that thing and find your season.  It’s about time.

Happy New Year!
