December Morning

It was early on a dark December morning.  I was on my way to work.  Traffic inched along, in and out through patches of fog and pockets of clear, the black sky flecked with stars.  It was almost seven o’clock.  Wasn’t it only a week ago that I was wearing my sunglasses at this time . . .  or was that July?  Now, as the shortest day of the year was fast approaching, I found myself daydreaming.   Perhaps you could call it a little “driver’s poetic license.”

Can it be
morning?
By the clock it is
but streetlights and stars glimmer
their defiance of the hour.
Bright eyes creep
two
by
two
Along the road to
work,
while earth’s fiery globe
dawdles with the dawn.

Savor the moment.  Enjoy your December.
