Around this time of year I’ve about had it with the weather — they’re telling us it’s spring, but it still looks and feels depressingly like winter.  I’m yearning for sunshine but we all know it’s seriously still a few months off.

One way I combat the dreariness is to surround myself with bright colors in my home year round. It makes me happy to walk in and see cheery orange and spring green after all the gray outside.

If your home’s ho-hum neutrals have you dozing off, I’m going to show you how you can easily wake things up with the addition of some colorful accessories, and it doesn’t have to cost a lot either.

Since most people tend to purchase basic-colored furniture, I’m using a taupe chair and ottoman as a starting point.

The first step is to pick an accent color you like, then bring in three or more items of the same color and place them in different areas around your room so it will look balanced and pulled together. (And if you’ve got neutral furniture like this, you don’t have to worry; just about any color will look good with it.)

Here are two pictures of the same “room:” one with orange accents and one with turquoise.

Same furniture, different accessories.  In both examples all I did was add a rug, a pillow and a lamp in a particular accent color.  And, voila, a bright new outlook!

This is a simple illustration, but really, it doesn’t have to be much more complicated than that.  And to sweeten the deal, all these items were found at either Target or Overstock.com.
