Room re-design in a weekend

As the seasons change, it’s natural to want to change things inside your home as well.  Here are a few easy things you can do in just a few hours to update your room and change your outlook on life!

Add a new accent color. The quickest way to change things up is to add a punchy color to the room, and there are so many fun new colors out there to try.  Pull things together by choosing one and then using it repeatedly in your accessories.  A few new bright pillows, a lamp shade, some candlesticks, a throw, or curtain panels can add new drama immediately.

Edit and re-arrange your accessories. Clearing out the clutter and giving your eye some breathing space can be very refreshing. Try moving all your accessories to the side and then start putting them back one by one in a new spot where they’ll have the most impact. Use the Bowling Ball Rule: none of your décor items should be smaller than a bowling ball.  If they are, either get rid of them or group them together so that they “read” larger.

Re-arrange your furniture.  The arrangement of the large items in your room can have a big impact on the comfort and coziness of your space. If you’ve got all the furniture backed up against the walls in the living room, try bringing things closer to the center to create a more conversational feel. Turn a chair, or the entire furniture grouping, on a 45 degree angle to add some interest. And if you’ve never tried them, those furniture sliders can be a godsend for moving heavy pieces.

For more great home design ideas, come to my free workshop on “How to Re-Design Your Room in One Weekend” this Saturday, April 21st, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Posh Designs in the Hollywood district, 4023 NE Hancock. You can register by visiting my website:  www.julienolta.com [7].  Bring pictures of your room if you’d like some free design advice. If you can’t make it this weekend, I can bring the show to you!  Contact me via my website for more information.
