Book lover turned eReader

A few years ago, I remember saying I would never read e-books. Well, things change. Yes, I will soon be buying myself an e-reading device. I’ve written many times on this site about my love for books. It’s not just that I Iike reading. . . I mean, I REALLY love books. I love turning the pages. I find comfort in the smell and the look of old books. I love book jackets. I love browsing in bookstores and libraries. How could an e-reader compare with all of that?

But, here’s the deal: We are simply running out of space in our relatively small home. We are now a family of four, and our home office recently became our new son’s room. I actually parted with some old books in order to make the dwindling space in our home more livable. It’s also a money issue. My Kindle-loving friends tell me e-books are less expensive, that there are lots of free books, and that you can even share e-books with one another. I frequently read new books before they’re available in libraries. Oh, the possibilities!

My e-reading friends and family say I’ll be thrilled when I take the leap. I will have thousands of books at my fingertips. When I miss turning real pages, I’ll go back to the treasured books still on my shelves—the tattered copy of “To Kill A Mockingbird” that I’ve had since high school, my leather-bound “Complete Works of William Shakespeare,” well-loved paperbacks with dog-eared pages and torn covers. Those books aren’t going anywhere.
