How to Control-Alt-Delete your life

When it comes to computers, I keep it simple.  I don’t text or twitter.  Blackberry remains my favorite jam while Google has become my favorite verb.  My cell phone doesn’t take pictures, my camera doesn’t ring and MySpace is a little wooden desk in a cozy corner of my living room where I do my writing.  If I get in a fix on my computer, I know how to escape—I hit and hold Control/Alt/Delete and hope for the best!

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could re-set the habits you’d like to fix that easily?  The more I think about it, the more I realize that you can, just not all at once.  Think of it as choosing one key at a time—small steps on your way to bigger, longer lasting changes.

Spring is here, a good time to assess and re-evaluate the goals you made for yourself at the beginning of the year.  Think of it as a kind of “spring inventory.”  Control/Alt/Delete can be used as an outline for almost any change.  Think about it.

Would you like to lose a few pounds?  Control a portion of your dinner, alter the amount of time you spend sitting, or delete one cookie!  Would you like to get up earlier and go for a walk or get to the gym?  Control the amount of time you spend on your computer, alter the time you go to bed by half an hour, or delete one television program one night a week for starters.  It’s a fun game in itself and mind games are good for your little gray cells!

Keep your mind and body active with your goals but don’t try to do them all at once.  Trying to Control/Alt/Delete too many things at once can lead to a crash of your “mother board.”  Not good!  Change happens slowly but, as time goes by, the little steps you take every day, one at a time, add up to big distances and when it comes to change, it’s the long run that counts.

I will be taking a hiatus this summer and switching from once a week to once a month.  Please let me know if there are any topics you would like me to cover or if you have any questions and I will try to cover them in my upcoming articles.  Enjoy the summer, the sunshine and staying fit!

Olivia
